Remember learning about the Birds and the Bees? This popular phrase has been used by parents and educators to talk to kids about a common childhood question; where do babies come from? Someone, somewhere, came up with the idea that by using characters that children could relate to, young kids would have an easier time understanding and digesting the big, taboo topic of SEX.  Or maybe (and very likely), it was so that parents would have an easier time explaining it. I suppose we could also refer to this 50’s style approach as the oh-so-wonderful avoidance technique. But, here is the thing about avoidance…questions remain unanswered and people find themselves unprepared and uninformed. I suppose in that regard, it is actually kind of ironic that we chose to call ourselves Birds and Bees Prenatal Classes. Our course content doesn’t leave anything out. We pride ourselves on telling it like it is and avoidance is definitely NOT something we are very good at. You want to know about your water breaking, pooping during pushing, sex after giving birth? We’ll meet those topics, and many more, head on.

When it comes to preparing for birth and bringing your new baby home, expecting parents can’t stick their heads in the sand. Being informed is the most important step you can take in your transition to parenthood. So, what are three things that you can do to make sure you are prepared for this next chapter in your life?

ONE: Communicate with your birth support team. Whether this is your partner, a friend, a family member or a birth professional, it is important to share your questions, fears, and expectations. This can provide an opportunity to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Our class will focus on finding strategies to plan for your birth in a relaxed and flexible way and ways to openly communicate with your partner and medical staff.

TWO: Get comfortable with common birth related vocabulary so that you do NOT avoid asking what you really want to know. For example, VAGINA. This is a pretty important word and body part in the world of labour and delivery. Don’t let words that may make you uncomfortable take away from asking what you need and want to know! Don’t worry- we’ll practice.

THREE: Here’s where we come in. Find a great prenatal class! Our prenatal class is fun, fresh and informative, and provides expecting parents with childbirth education from the best of both worlds! Between our professional roles as birth supporters with experience supporting many different types of births, plus our additional training and our personal roles as moms, we can give you the information, resources and support that you really need to get you ready for this next chapter in your life.
